The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
