Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
An important representative commented the incident made him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
